A brief smile flickered on Gokudera's face for a moment when Ryuutaro spoke, and he held Ryuutaro a bit closer as he felt his heart flutter just a bit.
The feeling is quickly dashed as Souichi starts to explain everything. Apparently the machine was used to prevent their older selves from going back to the past to try and fix the future, trapping the younger versions here: and the one who shot them all with the ten year bazooka? Souichi. For the purpose of obtaining the rings that the older Vongola had destroyed, because with the power of those rings as well as another set of rings known as the Mare rings and the Arcobaleno Pacifiers, Byakuran, the leader of the Millefiore, would have the power to destroy the world and build a new one. Gokudera is speechless, he knew the ring was important, to him it represented his place in the Vongola as the Tenth's right-hand man; the entire purpose of his life. He knew they were powerful as well, but he didn't know the artifact had that kind of power.
He went to look at his ring only to find that it was not there. His eyes widened and his head snapped up, suddenly he wasn't feeling so confident about the situation. He did his best not to show it though. He took a deep breath and kept his gaze focused on his boss. The Tenth could handle it. As his right-hand man he would lead by example and stay strong and put all his faith in his Boss.
The pair of twins next to Souichi step forward, claiming that if he does not hand over his ring by the count of three they will switch the gas in the chamber to poison, killing all inside. Tsuna struggles to take off his now dormant gloves (which had reverted to their rather ridiculous mitten-form during the conversation) while Lal Mirch shouts at him to forget about them and attack Souichi, claiming they would kill them all anyway once the ring was handed over. At one time Gokudera would have agreed with Lal and joined her calls, but he had Ryuutaro. He told Ryuutaro everything would be fine. He couldn't just change that to 'please kill us now because they'll definitely do it later'. He sits up with Ryuutaro, running his hand through his hair with a loving gentleness that betrayed how tense he was, as well as the feeling of the situation they were in. With the hand woven into the locks of Ryuutaro's hair he pulls the boy's head closer for a little kiss on the forehead, though the teens eyes never leave the scene before them, and his intense expression unchanging. He leans closer to Ryuutaro's ear and whispers soothingly to him.
"Everything is going to be fine, Tesoro. You weren't brought here just to be miserable and die. We're going to get out of here, fix this mess, go back to our time. I'll become the Tenth's right hand man, I'll grow stronger and always make sure you're safe. And we'll grow old together, and maybe even find a way to get married. I promise, we're going to be okay. We're always going to be okay."
