Hayato started rubbing Ryuutaro's back, holding him close. Whispering in his ear "Everything is going to be okay." and "I'll protect you." Both claims he felt completely sure of. With his boss out there... and Hibari trapped inside the glass prison as well, he was completely sure they would be fine.

Lal Mirch called out to destroy the machine, which Hayato promptly chimed in with agreement, assuming it would fix everything and send them back to the past. Souichi had other plans however...

"Honestly I'm amazed at your ignorance. If you destroy this device the ones inconvenienced will be you, right?"

Then the machine starts to open... Souichi continues speaking, but his words are lost in the shock of what the machine holds. The slumbering future selves of everyone present, as well as the girls who were back at the base...

and there, next to the older Hayato, was an older Ryuutaro. The whole situation had Hayato's jaw gaping open. First at the fact that there were their future selves, then second at the boy... no... the man next to him in the machine. Ten years... ten whole years...

and Ryuutaro really didn't leave him.
